September 29
Well the last two days have been exciting; end of year closeout, budget, and ordering $7 M worth of parts before midnight. We are used to long hours but at year’s end it is even worse.
The weather got blustery and the air was filled with dust. Lots of flights were cancelled and one of our folks that was supposed to have left yesterday is still here waiting at the airfield. This stuff also tastes nasty and gets in your sinuses and when you sneeze you end up with a hand full of mud. This is particularly unpleasant if you are standing behind someone at the checkout; don’t try to clean them up just move to another line. They’ll never know.
There appears to be a never ending problem with the showers either they don’t work or the water is icy cold; this last problem is particularly embarrassing because your scream unnerves the neighbors.
The food is somewhat interesting after a week of eating it you start dreaming of India, after a month you have to fight the urge to move your family there. The only remedy is a large slice of Pecan pie smothered in Baskin Robbins ice cream.
One of our contractors has a touch of the two step and was very distressed and asked if anybody knew of a sure fire remedy that works; at about this time one the guys who had just lost button off his shirt entered the room and shouted ”I’ve got it”. At which time the contractor looked at him and then at the sewing kit and ran from the room. I guess he didn’t really want our help.
I work with three computers and three each for a different purpose. I have to track email on each one and when the phone rings I play the shell game looking for the one that is ringing. I have solved the problem at least for now. I pretend to be busy and ask someone else to get the phone. Ahh it’s good to be the king.

Well it was a pretty busy day; lots of meetings, VTCs and arguing with a contractor. It is easy to see how these guys operate they look for any loophole they can find to get Uncle Sugar to add to their profit. I have several things going on right now to turn the tables. I have asked for 6 months of time cards for all personnel because I know they carried folks on the books while they were on leave. The USG doesn’t pay for contractor R&Rs. They have a large number of vehicles borrowed from USG until they got their own; consequently they owe us for vehicles they didn’t buy. Plus they have to restore the vehicles they borrowed to original condition. They won’t be happy with that.
I was warm again today about 102 degrees but the nights are getting colder; it was 73 degrees last night. Get the blankets out!
It gets pretty boring here at night nothing to do but after a 16hr day you are too tired anyway. Most of us try to watch a movie or something but it takes several nights to finish because we fall asleep.
We got hot showers again today but lousy water pressure but at least it’s wet. Let’s hope the CHUs stay operational.
My Suburban is totally covered in mud from the rain we had yesterday. It’s going to rain again this weekend so I won’t bother to wash it.
We are having a Bar’ B Que this weekend for one of the folks leaving; at the rate they are leaving we will be grilling every night, which won’t help my physique any. Thank goodness for ‘stretchy’ pants.
